Function and Philosophy
The virtues are ranked fifth in the heavenly host out of the nine choirs of angels. They are members of the second triad with dominations and powers. As a member of this triad, they take part in the duties given to the three choirs, namely the ordering of the universe. The virtues specifically preside over the elements of the world and the process of celestial life. Thus all heavenly bodies-from the stars and planets to the galaxies themselves-are kept in their divinely appointed routes and progress. On earth the angels maintain a watch over nature, marking and guiding every facet of natural life: rain, sow, wind, etc. It has also be speculated that Virtues are in charge of miracles.
As if these duties were not enough, the angels also assist humanity by stowing grace and valor within the mortal heart. They encourage humans to turn always to the good and help enhance the person's will to endure hardship and suffering and to have the personal strength to turn ever toward
God. As the angels in charge of miracles, they receive their orders from the powers, but they are also closely interlaced with the saints.
Members of this Angelic Choir
Gabriel - This archangel is a primary messenger of God, bringing divine announcements and revelations to humankind. Acting as an intermediary between heaven and earth, he helps us to interpret our dreams and our visions. Gabriel grants wishes and hopes to mortals, as well as joy, mercy, understanding of mysteries, truth, justice, miracles and love. His name means "hero of God" and he is the angel of resurrection. Essene prayer: "Gabriel, Angel of Life, enter my limbs and give strength to my whole body". He also presides over the Moon, those born under the sun sign of Aquarius, in the month of January, and those born on a Monday.
Michael - The angel of protection. Michael also oversees those who were born on Sunday and the Sun. An archangel, who grants miracles, fosters mercy, repentance, truth, sanctification, blessing, immortality, patience and love to human-kind. This archangel is protective of those who are just and good. He strengthens our spirits in difficult times. Pray to Michael for these gifts and virtues. Essene prayer: "Michael, Angel of Earth, enter my generative organs and regenerate my whole body". He is also the angel of Armed Forces.
Tarshish - The chief/prince of the regents of the Tarshishim
Peliel - Jacob's guardian angel. He, along with Zekuniel, is an angel of the second sephira.
Barbiel - This benevolent one grants success, good fortune and excellent luck to mortals who pray to him. He also inspires joviality and a sense of humor. When we pray to this angel on a regular basis, we find that we become filled with happiness, our hearts expand, and we make a space for this angel of good fortune to enter. His other names are Babiel, Barbuel and Baruel.
Uzziel (Strength of God) - Angel of the order of Virtues and Cherubim. Also one of the 7 angels who stand before the throne of glory and among the 9 who set over the 4 winds. Uzziel is commanded by Gabriel to "coast the south wind with the strictest watch" Also known as an angel of mercy, under the ruler ship of Metatron.
Satan - Before he fell from God's grace. His other names are Lucifer, Rabbinic (Hebrew meaning 'the ugly one'), Beelzebub (from Latin. In Greek it's Beelzeboul, meaning 'the devil' {Matthew 12:24}. In Hebrew, Baalzebub, meaning 'lord of the flies', which was also the name of one of the Philistine Gods {2 Kings 1:2}), and Lucifer, which is odd as this name is Old English meaning 'light-bringing' or 'morning star').
