LUNAR YEARS

Once upon a time, long ago Buddha had come to Earth in human form. When he was ready to depart he invited the animals to come and bid him farewell. Only 12 animals came. So the Chinese signs were named after them in the order of their arrival - The Rat, The Ox, The Tiger, The Rabbit, The Dragon, The Snake, The Horse, The Sheep, The Monkey, The Rooster, The Dog, and The Boar. And that is how there came to be 12 Chinese signs.



The dates listed on the tables below are the first day of the new year. Taking 1900 as an example; it was the year of The Rat from January 31, 1900 until February 18, 1901. If a person was born between January 1st and January 30th of 1900 then they would subtract a year. Thus their Chinese sign would be the year of the Boar.
